What is the Lightening-Up Your Anxiety Program?

It is an intensive course of psychotherapy focused on helping people struggling with anxiety.

Who is the psychotherapist?

Thomas Burnside. He has a long-history of disabling anxiety and has managed to “lighten-up” a lot… now it mostly seems amusing to him. Tom is a registered student counsellor at the Australian Counselling Association and a psychology/neuroscience student. Tom is also the CEO of PsychUni.com, the founder of Levitism and president of the Melbourne Walking Club.

What makes it "intensive"?

Essentially we are offering you the opportunity to get 4 therapy sessions per week for the price of 1 + you have a 24/7 support-network. This means you can expect a greater and more long-lasting transformation in a 3-month period and beyond.

What is the commitment?

The commitment is a minimum of 13-weeks.

– A$97 / week for individual therapy
– A$27 / week for group therapy
– A$5 / week for support-network

What happens if I want to cancel?

We prefer if people only sign up if they are willing to commit to the full 3 months but if you really want to cancel you may send an email in writing requesting to cancel and we will cancel it.

What benefits will I get out of the program?

I am quite confident we can reduce your anxiety. Everyone gets a little anxiety though. The thing that makes this program different is that your relationship with anxiety will change. You will lighten it up – with less distress and suffering. Levitism makes anxiety amusing (not distressing).

I want more out of life than simply managing anxiety... what positive outcomes can you help me with?

I understand and empathise with that. I wanted more too that’s why I started PsychUni.com and Melbourne Walking Club. I’d be happy to talk about your values and goals as your mentor.

What are the free workshops?

The free workshops are 10 weekly/monthyl recurring Zoom meetings planned for 2025. They encompass all of the main techniques for managing anxiety and we think people will get plenty of value out of attending them (and you are welcome to do so). however they are not a substitute for individual/group psychotherapy or a support network.

What is Thomas's philosophy about psychotherapy?

Thomas’s philosophy about psychotherapy is called Levitism which is an integrative approach. An integrative approach doesn’t adhere to any one school of thought (such as psychoanalysis or existential therapy for example). The counsellor seeks to become proficient in the different approaches and apply them intuitively in the moment when in-session.

What techniques does Thomas recommend?

Essentially Thomas recommends that you do what works for you. We hope that you will be in a life-long habit of doing 3-4 techniques by the end of the program so it’s important that you identify techniques that don’t feel too much like work. For Tom, mindfulness meditation really “stuck” as a habit and the long-term application of that practice is what caused the transformation.

Do the sessions happen online or face-to-face?

3 of the group-sessions happen online on Zoom. 1 of the support-network session happens in a private function room in a pub in Melbourne CBD on Sunday evening.

Thomas has a consulting room that you can come to (at the downstairs area of his house). Either online or in-person is fine. We ask that you let us know ahead of time if you prefer to come in person.

What time-slots are available for individual/group sessions?

We try to spread the group sessions out across different time slots so that people who are busy can at least come to 1-2 of them per week. 2 of the group sessions are in the morning before work, 2 in the evening after work and 1 is on Sunday night.

As for individual sessions you can book a time in Thomas’s calendar between 12pm and 7pm Monday to Friday (mornings are unavailable).

What if I want to go for longer than 13 weeks?

I would like that too. We can discuss what you want to do closer to the date but yes that should be fine.

Will there be continued support after the program?

You are welcome to contact Tom by email, SMS, WhatsApp, LinkedIn etc.  Also perhaps you would like to stay in the support-network group chat for a longer time-frame. You can also come to the free online workshops or walking meetups.

What should I do if I have questions or concerns?

If you are considering the program I would be happy to jump on a quick phone call to answer any questions you might have. Please book a 15-minute slot in my calendar here and I will call you at that time.
